Preseason

MANSFIELD - With nine returning starters on offense, is it any wonder that the Mansfield High School football team has been ranked among the Hockomock League's preseason elite?

But seventh-year head coach Mike Redding says his Hornets aren't taking anything for granted. "They know that with nine starters back, they're going to get a lot of notice from coaches and the media," he said. "That's a sign of respect, but they also know that it doesn't mean a lot once they step on the football field. "

Redding, who has brought Mansfield to two Super Bowls and won one in his six seasons, admitted he can't help but be enthusiastic about his team's experience - particularly the fact that last year's team finished 5-5 and upset Foxboro on Thanksgiving after struggling to a 1-4 start.

"The kids hung in there and saw their efforts rewarded," he said. "But we still have to answer a few questions at a few positions, and develop some depth."

Perhaps the most encouraging sign is the return of Mansfield's entire offensive line and tight end, giving the Hornets experience at a time of the season when other teams are struggling to find cohesion along the line.

Tackles Paul Marder (5-1l, 238) and Eric Schleman (5-11, 212), guards Dave Sullivan (6-0, 192) and Steve Medeiros (5-11, 188) and center Jeff Devine (6-0, 185) give Redding an all-senior unit that has been "a pleasure to coach. "

They're joined by senior Kerry Taylor (6-3, 220) at tight end, an accomplished receiver and solid blocker who has backed 20 more pounds on his frame but lost none of his speed.

That all spells good news for senior quarterback Fred Vallett (6-0, 172), who threw for just over 1,000 yards last year. Also returning is starting senior split end Warren Bacon (6-3, 187) and senior fullback Rob Smith (6-1, 194).

The newcomers are at flanker, where junior Andy Selchan (5-11, 165) will share time with sophomore Erik Lundell (5-10, 150), and at tailback, where sophomore Vinnie Hollins (5-9, 170) has been a pleasant surprise.

Junior John Regan backs up Vallett at quarterback. Juniors Shawn Cavalieri and Kevin Barre and sophomore Joe Todd are the backfield reserves, while senior Mike Brunelli at tight end and junior Mike Lundell (Erik's cousin) at split end are ready to step in if needed.

Along the line, Redding can call upon junior Alex French at tackle, senior John Ewens at guard and junior Rob Jewett at center. "The main thing for us is to develop depth and make sure those second guys can play in case we need them," Redding said. For all of the experience they have on offense, the Hornets may have more work to do defensively.

Marder and Schleman give Mansfield a pair of strong interior linemen in its 4-4 alignment, while Taylor and Devine appear set to provide strong pursuit at the ends. French and senior Paul Lunn back up the guards and Brunelli and Todd are next in line on the ends. Redding calls his hybrid outside linebackers the "Stinger" and "Hornet." Sullivan is the former, backed up by sophomore Neil DeGirolamo, and Erik Lundell (5-10, 150) the latter, backed up by junior Ryan Palmieri. Smith and Medeiros return as the inside 'backers, with Barre and junior Mike Felton in reserve.

Vallett and senior Jason Aleman (5-9, 140) are the corner backs and Bacon the free safety. Mike Lundell, Cavalieri and Selchan are the backups.

Another plus is the anticipated return of senior Rob Reed (5-9, 165) in the secondary. He suffered an injured knee ligament last year, and is awaiting the medical OX to return to action.

"We're strong in linebacking and at the nose positions, so that makes us solid up the middle of the 4-4," Redding said. "That's important in the Hockomock be- cause to win a championship, we've got to be great defensively and especially strong against the run.

Brunelli will handle all the kicking chores, backed up by Vallett. Hollins and Erik Lundell will be the Hornets' primary return men.

Lincoln-Sudbury

SUDBURY - A bittersweet victory it was.

Mike Redding's Mansfield Hornets partially settled an old score with Lincoln-Sudbury, winning Friday night's season opener 21-7. The Warriors dealt Redding perhaps his most disappointing loss five years ago when Tom Lopez's troops ran over the Green Machine for the Division 3 Super Bowl title. In last year's season- opener L-S visited Memorial Park and took advantage of a young Hornet squad for a win that started Mansfield on a 1-4 skein to start the season. Friday's game started as if the 1994 version of the Hornets wanted to exorcise all those ghosts with one thunderous blow.

With the second quarter just 12 seconds old, Mansfield led 21-7 and had piled up over 200 yards of offense and accumulated eight first downs.

But from there, the runaway train hit the skids.

A 67-yard option run by senior quarterback Fred Vallett seemed to put the Hornets in position to put the game away, but a sack and two untimely penalties stymied Mansfield's knockout blow.

"We could have put them away 28-7 right there and buried them, but we shot ourselves in the foot," said Redding, who was nonetheless pleased that his team, and especially his defense, didn't fold.

OLIVER AMES

MANSFIELD - Bill Parcells has spent most of this football season trying to figure out how to get his New England Patriots' running game to set up the passing game.

Unlike Parcells, Mansfield High's Mike Redding doesn't mind doing it the opposite way.

"It kind of works a little backwards for us," Redding said Saturday after his Hornets pinned a 32-6 Hockomock League whipping on Oliver Ames High at Memorial Park.

"You really want to establish the run and then go to the play-action, but today we got the passing game going and they were forced to widen things out," he said. Hornets' QB Fred Vallett, seeing his team was going no-where on the ground in its first possession against the previously unbeaten-in-league Tigers, hooked up with wide receiver Warren Bacon for three receptions of 31, 13 and 5 yards to bring Mansfield, (5-1, 4-0) to the OA 27.

That opened the running lanes a little, but Vallett (8-for-13, 136 yards) opened them even wider by calling his own number for gains of six, five and nine yards. Finally, the senior quarterback threw a nifty bootleg-right; pass- left completion in the end zone to Vinnie Hollins on fourth-and-goal from the 3, and ran the ball in himself for an 8-0 lead.

It was a masterful, 16-play, 73- yard march that consumed 7:36 and set the tone for Mansfield's offense for the rest of the day. Redding said. "They've got pretty good people up front, but it's pretty tough to cover Bacon and (tight end Kerry) Taylor one-on-one with their height and speed. We had to go with what they were giving us."

While the Hornets' offense was hitting on all cylinders, the defense was one of Redding's biggest concerns at the start. After having the barn doors blown off a week earlier by Attleboro, Redding feared the worst. On the Tigers' first drive when big full- back Paul Gioioso (16 carries, 91 yards) ripped off three long gains, including a 20-yard TD run two plays into the second quarter to bring Ames within two points.

"Early on, we were a little soft on defense," Redding said. "Our pursuit angles weren't very good, we had too many guys at the point of attack and their kids broke some tackles and broke outside."

But as quickly as Ames struck back, the game's fortunes turned against them. Quarterback Craig Paris, rolling right on the conversion play, threw the ball right into the numbers of Mansfield's David Sullivan, and the Hornet captain had a clear 99 yard path to the end zone to put two points on the board for the home team.

"That was big because instead of a tie game, we were up four," Redding said. "Then we came back and scored again, and suddenly it's a three-touchdown-to-one game. Emotionally, it made a big difference."

The Hornets took that big lift and drove 83 yards on nine plays to take an 18-6 lead. Vallett had a 30-yard gain on the march, and threw a pair of passes to Taylor, a 21-yarder and a beautiful 18-yarder on play-action for the score with 7:20 left in the half. Vallett also found Hollins with a screen pass for the conversion.

Hornets grab share of Hockomock title

The Hornets have never been at a loss for offensive production this season. And Friday night was no exception, as Mansfield High's football team amassed 363 yards of offense, marching right over the Franklin Panthers, 36-7, at Memorial Park and clinching a share of the Hockomock league title.

Sophomore tailback Vinny Hollins ran for 88 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and QB Fred Vallett threw for two more, as Mansfield scored on five of its first six possessions to open up a 36-0 lead after three quarters.

Falmouth

FALMOUTH - In a Saturday shootout at Gov. Fuller Field, Mansfield High's Freddy Vallett proved to be the best triggerman of them all. The Hornets' senior quarter-back pass for 235 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 91 yards and one electrifying score to lead Mansfield to a thrilling 32-28 victory over non-league, Division I foe Falmouth.

It was a contest very much worthy of two Super Bowl teams. The 8-1 Hornets, as winners of the Hockomock League, will play Bishop Feehan in the Division 3B bowl. Falmouth (7-2) must either beat or tie Barnstable on Thanksgiving Day to clinch the Old Colony League title.

There were over 700 yards of offense and seven drives of 55 yards or more for touchdowns. It was the kind of game where you knew whoever had the ball last would win.

As symbolic as could be, there was Vallett kneeling down on the Clipper 11 as time ran out. Vallett had directed and starred in the Hornets' final, game-saving, drive after Falmouth had tried an on- side kick after scoring with 3:24 left to close the gap to four.

Senior fullback Robert Smith picked up one important first down with a 10-yard run up the n-dddle. Then, facing a third-and- 10 from the Falmouth 39, Vallett hit senior tight end Kerry Taylor (four receptions, 68 yards) over the middle for a 15-yard gain.

After the Clippers held on a third-and-one play, Hornet coach Mike Redding elected to go for it on fourth down with 1: 38 to play. Vallett came through again, scampering for nine yards to secure the win.

"This, was a great, great foot- ball game between two very good teams," said Redding. "Freddy's been unbelievable for us all season running and throwing the ball. Perhaps Vallett turned in the biggest play of the game as time expired in the first half. Mansfield had just retaken the lead 18-14 and forced Falmouth to punt. A 20-yard boot by Falmouth gave Mansfield the ball on their own 47 with 43 seconds left.

On fourth-and-four from the Falmouth 47, sophomore tailback Vincent Hollins picked up just enough to keep the drive alive. With just nine seconds left Redding called for a Hail Mary pass into the end zone, but Vallett, pressured out of the pocket took off up the sideline, picked up a couple big blocks and scored as time expired. The conversion pass failed, but the Hornets led 24-14 at intermission.

"That play was huge because it gave us more than a one touch- down lead. You knew a one- touchdown lead wasn't going to last," said Redding. "It's funny because we were all yelling for Freddy to get out of bounds, but he spotted a lane and took off."

Foxboro

MANSFIELD - Resplendent in their new 75th anniversary throw-back jerseys, the Mansfield High football Hornets gained victory the old fashioned way - they earned it.

In the 64th meeting between the Hornets and Foxboro Warriors, Mansfield scored 20 fourth-quarter points to complete its Hockomock league season unbeaten with a 28-12 Thanksgiving Day victory.

Senior Robert Smith keyed a scaled-down Hornet offense, rushing for 182 yards, 105 in the second half, on 18 carries and scoring three touchdowns.

With the league championship already sewn up and a date with unbeaten Bishop Feehan on tap next Saturday in the Division 3B Super Bowl, the Hornets, now 9-1 check, including holding league offensive MVP, senior quarter- back Freddy Vallett, to just 105 yards passing and stopping Mansfield four times inside the 30, while the Warrior offense did just enough to earn a 12-6 lead on the strength of a 27-yard touchdown run by Tony Porazzo 2:35 into the third quarter.

But instead of celebrating the hard-to-come-by score, the Warriors were left with mouths agar as Mansfield's Kerry Taylor stripped the ball from quarterback Chris Warnat on the two-point conversion attempt and rumbled 80 yards for a two-point safety return was that big in terms of points, but it was big in terms of momentum.

It kind of stopped their momentum after the touchdown," said Mansfield coach Mike Redding, who is leading his team into the Super Bowl for the third time in seven years.

Bishop Feehan

Marvelous day for Mansfield

MANSFIELD - With precision, with determination and with a defense which recovered two fumbles and intercepted a pair of passes, the Mansfield High School football team has become Super Bowl champions once again.

Hornet senior quarterback Fred Vallett threw for three touchdowns, sophomore running back Vin Hollins rushed for 86 yards and the Hornets short-circuited previously unbeaten Bishop Feehan High 27-14 before some 4,500 fans at Memorial Park Saturday in the Eastern Mass. Division 3B championship game.

The Hornets drove 73 yards for a touchdown to open the game.

They converted a pair of Shamrock fumbles into first-half touchdowns. Then they drove 62 yards to start the second half in taking a seemingly insurmountable 27-0 lead against the defensive-minded Eastern Athletic Conference champions, who had their unbeaten status stopped at 17 games.

In winning their 10th game of the season, the Hornets turned fumble recoveries by Kevin Barre (at the Mansfield 33) and by Eric Colby (at the Feehan 39) into game-breaking touchdown passes off the fingertips of Vallett.

Warren Bacon, the Hornets' glue-fingered senior receiver, latched onto a 61-yard toss from Vallett with just under three minutes left in the first quarter, then grabbed an eight-yard toss for another six points midway through the second quarter.

"All season long when we made mistakes, our defense enabled us to stay in there, to get back into the game," said Bishop Feehan coach Matt Lanagan. "We made mistakes and they're a better football team."

The Shamrock defense was on its heels through three-quarters, unable to significantly alter the running and passing threat of Vallett.

"Bacon is as good a receiver as anybody I've seen and Vallett is a college quarterback." said Lanagan of the duo, who combined for five catches for 118 yards.
